Congresswoman Miller and Congressman Davis have introduced the Second Chance Reauthorization Act of 2024, a bipartisan bill that extends reentry grant programs from the Second Chance Act of 2008 for another five years. Miller emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for success, stating, "The Second Chance Reauthorization Act is an important component of my efforts to reduce recidivism rates and increase public safety."
Congressman Davis highlighted the impact of Second Chance programs, stating, "Continuing to invest in these evidenced-based interventions is a commonsense approach to strengthen individuals, re-build families, and grow our economy."
Several other representatives have joined the effort, including Congressman Scott, who emphasized the importance of supporting individuals returning to society, stating, "We have the evidence and tools at our disposal to reduce recidivism and encourage successful reentry." Congressman Armstrong, a former criminal defense attorney, commended the program for reducing recidivism and making communities safer.
The legislation has garnered support from various organizations, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National League of Cities, recognizing the importance of providing second chances and promoting public safety. The Second Chance Act has proven successful over the years, with more than 442,000 justice-involved individuals participating in reentry services and over $600 million awarded in grants since 2009.
In West Virginia, the Second Chance Act has had a significant impact, with the state receiving over $5 million in grants that have changed many lives. Programs like the "turn around" initiative in Huntington, West Virginia, have successfully reduced recidivism rates, showcasing the effectiveness of the Second Chance Act in helping individuals reintegrate into society.
The Second Chance Reauthorization Act of 2024 aims to continue supporting individuals reentering society after incarceration, providing them with robust reentry services and opportunities to lead productive lives. The bipartisan effort reflects a commitment to empowering formerly incarcerated individuals and promoting safer communities across the nation.
